The context
When a local authority designs a mineral walkway — public square, park path, esplanade — the question of night-time lighting quickly arises. Wiring every area with LED lighting means trenches, cables, electrical cabinets, and a consumption bill that spans thirty years.
luciolles proposes another way: to integrate light directly into the floor. Not as a complement, but as a property of the material itself.
Our solution
Luminescent exposed aggregate concrete combines a standard exposed aggregate concrete — visible pebbles, mineral aesthetic — with luciolles photoluminescent gravel. The aggregates absorb daylight, store it within their mineral matter, then release it for several hours after nightfall.
Installation follows the rules of any standard exposed aggregate concrete: pouring, surface retarder, high-pressure washing, joint treatment. No specific skill is required from the installation crew. The only difference lies in the aggregate.
The outcome is a floor that, by day, reads as a premium exposed aggregate concrete — raw matter, regular grain, mineral tone. By night, the luminescent pebbles emerge from the dark background, draw the walkway, guide the step.
The observed results
Where public lighting punctuates the landscape with vertical points of light, luminescent concrete spreads light across the entire surface. You no longer read a pole: you read a floor. The night-time experience changes in nature — the user walks on light, rather than under it.
From the client’s perspective, the value appears over time: no wiring, no cabinet, no electrical maintenance, no fixture replacement. Once the concrete is poured, the light is secured for the material’s lifespan.
Environmentally, light pollution disappears. The aggregates emit only a soft, upward-facing light, without halo, without aggression for night-time wildlife.
Luminescent concrete finds its use wherever mineral aesthetics meets a wayfinding need: public building squares, park paths, esplanades, station approaches, heritage walkways.
It’s the product where luciolles technology is at its most discreet — and perhaps its most accurate: light is no longer an object, it becomes a state of the floor.
